  1. Life can be tough, especially for a single mom. In fact, what happens when you get five of them together forming a support group to get through life's everyday ups and downs? Why, you get the generically titled The Single Moms Club of course and it's the latest of many Tyler Perry films that have inhabited local multiplexes in the last few years.

Filmed almost entirely in Atlanta, Georgia and showcasing scenes of females conversing that are the equivalent to a taping of The View (if that's your thing), The Single Moms Club is proof that maybe Hollywood might have ran out of ideas for cinematic fluff in general. Now from the opening frame, we are immediately introduced to May (Nia Long), Hillary (Amy Smart), Lytia (Cocoa Brown), Esperanza (Zulay Henao), and Jan Malkovich (Wendi McLendon-Covey). These are all women who are either currently separated, divorced, or have baby daddies who were never around (except for Esperanza's who's played by Eddie Cibrian and he's the ultimate Nazi ex-husband). Added to that, their kids don't like them very much and blame them for not fully being present in their daily lives. Somehow by sure kismet (otherwise there wouldn't be a valid running time), all of said kids go to the same school, get in trouble at the same time, and all face harsh penalties as students. When the principal of their private school calls all the moms in for a meeting, these five completely different women are forced to organize a fund raiser or else their offspring will be expelled (what a weird form of punishment). What ensues is a bond of sisterhood that ultimately betters all of their future existences and as the plot requires, helps them find new relationships in the form of significant others.

The acting, well it's fair as long as everyone doesn't say whatever pops in their heads. I mean, you could tell during some scenes that the actors/actresses paused as if they didn't remember their lines and had to gulp, improvise. I could hear crickets in background. You know not literally, but in my head (I hate when that happens).

Overall, once I finished taking in a midday viewing, I realized that The Single Moms Club came off as a very uneven viewing experience. The film drips with sentimental goo and shifts its tone from funny, to uncomfortable, to flat out depressing ever so quickly. There are some heartfelt moments between members of the cast (especially amongst the mothers, the sons, and the daughters) that are effectively powerful. But with an underdeveloped conclusion, some embarrassingly bad line riffing from the actors as mentioned earlier (especially during the outtakes at the end), and a demeaning label that seems saddled to their roles, it was difficult to call this thing inspiring.

In hindsight though, I didn't find The Single Moms Club to be a bad film. I just found it to be almost mean-spirited, too coincidental, and vaguely aloof. Let me put it this way, it's a "club" worth checking out only if you avoid going to all the meetings.

  2. I thought this would be a good film, due to the cast but like many of Tyler Perry films, this fell completely flat. This film lacked any true character developments and emotions.Like all of his other films, it has so many clichés and points out obvious issues as a joke.It has a lot of stereotypes; from rich white women who can't manage their kids, poor black women that cant get a break but has to stay strong for all her kids while living in poverty, working women that are struggling both juggling their jobs and kids and of course the single mom not looking for love but finds it.This movie is so hard to watch. It seems like everything in this film is forced from the awkward flat jokes to the wannabe heart-felt moments. It seems the more movies Tyler Perry makes, the less realistic and forced they become.Maybe if this was under better direction, like all his other films needed(except Madea films, there was no help for those)these would have been great movies.

  3. This movie was awful. They all talk about the single moms club but they repeatedly complain about the men paying their alimony, child support and talk about getting new men and fixing each other up. A TRUE single mother is one that has no father - no alimony, no child support and the father is gone. As in passed away, in jail or otherwise absent. Not a man who wants to co-parent and contributes financially. These women needed a MAN to help them build their sets for the kids play. This is horrible. It is an insult to REAL single mothers (widows) who have no option to fight and fuss with an ex. How about they do a story about the war widows who are REAL single mothers. Pathetic movie. The only reason I rated a "1" is because there was no option for anything less.

  4. The story follows five single moms, each one with her own problems, got together and decide to form a support group for themselves after they meet at their teenage children's school. The single moms are Jan who is a successful career woman with a teenage girl whom she rarely spend time with; May, a fledgling writer with a teenage boy, and her ex-husband disappoints their son over and over again; Hillary who is a mother of three, with her oldest daughter is on the time of turning into a physically mature woman; and Lytia is a waiter with a guy crazy about her yet she keeps rejecting; while Esperanza has a boyfriend whom she keeps secretly in fear that her ex-husband will cut her off child support.

The basic story somewhat relates to many women, whether in the US or other English-speaking countries. No wonder this movie can manage to get to Box Office. The cast selection shows that this movie wasn't designed for greatness from the very start. The acting is achieved overall is thus a so-so. That thing made character development limited only to what the story and screenplay provides, that even those are insufficient. One more thing that boggles me is that the story is not given a chance to develop completely. It is as if the movie is forced to meet a target of being about 90 minute in length. The ending is even so abrupt because the final conflict is plainly strange.

For a movie that falls into Comedy genre on IMDb, the jokes are mostly corny or just plain not funny at all. There is the drama element, alright. But even the drama isn't developed well. And when there is a scene of heightened emotional moment, the acting spikes drastically from so-so up to overacting. One thing though, I was surprised to see Terry Crews here, and it is a comedy in itself.

I guess I don't really have a say on the other aspects such as costumes, makeup or music scoring and soundtrack. Not because they are bad, I think they are just okay. It's just that the overall quality of the movie is just relatively bad. So I guess this is the second time, back to back, Tyler Perry has made a movie that is not of a relatively good quality, after last year's "A Madea Christmas".

For me, it's a 3 out of 10 scoring movie. No, I don't recommend you to see it. Well, if only the story is developed better, maybe that'll help.
